SUSAN
It was lunchtime on a hot clear day in August when Ken Krautter, an Atlanta accountant, was walking along "the strip". Actually a few blocks of North Peachtree Street in Atlanta, which during the quick upsurge of the youth movement became the hangout for runaways, people looking for what they thought would be a new life, and love children who probably needed love most of all.
As was the custom, blank faces of the group swarmed the sidewalks, some talking, some sitting and not talking at all, and a few asking for handouts from passing strangers.
Normally Ken was pretty oblivious to the pleas, a CPA has a lot on his mind, but one young face framed with stringy blond hair happened to catch his eye. She approached him, but rather than asking, offered. Her youth made her proposition unbelievable. And in partial shock all Ken could muster was, "Look, if you're hungry I'll buy you a sandwich", motioning to a close lunch counter. While she ate she talked, really making conversation to help repay for the food. Her biography was short. She was from Minnesota, pregnant and a heroin addict, selling herself to pay for her habit. She was thirteen years old.
The brief encounter haunted Ken for months. A problem that was everyone else's had suddenly become his. He couldn't shake a commitment to make Susan everyone's concern.
Commitments by Ken, Penny, Kimberly, and Derek Krautter inspired Jan and Jim Pringle and Toby Dixon with Pringle Dixon Pringle to set the Story of Susan to make all children on Earth everyone's concern forevermore.
